Filming in Didsbury, Manchester

Large red brick Victorian villas behind hedges, and the pub Cold Feet returns to on Barlow Moor Road.

The Wilmslow Road and School Lane corner, a red and cream brick building with striped arched upper windows and dormers over the shopfronts, traffic lights at the junction below.

What Didsbury looks like

Large Victorian villas stand behind clipped hedges and brick walls on and the avenues around it, red brick under blue slate roofs with stone dressings around the windows and doors. Bay windows project from the ground floor, and gabled fronts with tall brick chimney stacks break up the rooflines. Some villas are finished in stucco or rough cast render, and the plots are wide enough to keep whole houses screened from the road.

The village centre sits where meets School Lane, low two and three storey buildings in red brick with white painted upper floors and shopfronts at street level. Dormer windows break the roofline above the shops, and a Portland stone clock tower stands on the pavement outside a corner supermarket. Traffic lights mark the junction, and a faded sign for a bedding merchant still shows on a gable end nearby.

Off the main road, streets such as Old Oak Street run in plain red brick terraces two rooms deep, with round headed doorways and white sash windows. Small iron railed front gardens sit behind the pavement. A cobbled lane behind the shops on is narrow enough for a single car, walled in red brick on both sides with hanging baskets over some of the doorways.

A park of open grass and tall trees sits behind the village, with a tarmac path and benches running through it. begins farther along Wilmslow Road, ninety acres sloping down to the River Mersey and Stenner Woods with mature trees and terraced lawns.

Shot in Didsbury

Cold Feet returns across its run to the Woodstock on Barlow Moor Road as the pub where Pete, Adam and David meet. The building plays itself, a corner pub in the same red brick as the rest of the street.

Cold Feet

A red brick corner pub with a green tiled base and hanging baskets either side of the door, a tree lined street running past it. The kind of Victorian corner pub Didsbury's own streets are built with, not the Woodstock itself, which has no free photograph on Commons.

The Woodstock on Barlow Moor Road is the local pub for Pete, Adam and David in Cold Feet. It is a Victorian red brick building on the corner, the same kind of corner pub found along the rest of the street. Street View

What Didsbury can double for

Edgbaston in Birmingham, England

Edgbaston's red brick villas in the Italianate and Gothic Revival styles were built on generous leasehold plots for Birmingham's Victorian industrialists, the same scale and material as Didsbury's own avenues. Streets such as Yateley Road and Carpenter Road keep long runs of detached and semi-detached villas behind hedges with almost no infill. Edgbaston's plots run larger and its villas sit further back from the road, so a tighter lens keeps the extra garden depth out of frame. Try searching red brick Victorian villa now.

Jesmond in Newcastle upon Tyne, England

Osborne Road and Clayton Road carry red brick Victorian villas in a Queen Anne style, built through the same decades as Didsbury's own avenues for Newcastle's shipping and industrial money. The scale and the hedged front gardens match closely. Some streets nearby run in sandstone rather than brick, so stick to the red brick blocks around Osborne Road to hold the match. Broomhill in Sheffield, England

Broomhill's Victorian villas were built for Sheffield's steel and cutlery manufacturers along winding, tree shaded roads, a similarly leafy scale to Didsbury's own avenues. The scale and the hedged plots read close in a tight street level frame. Most of Broomhill's villas are stone rather than Didsbury's red brick, so wider shots give away the different palette and this works best in shots that favour scale and greenery over facade colour.
