Limestone Gothic quadrangles beside brick courtyard apartment buildings, where Divergent used the Mansueto Library's glass dome as the Erudite sector.
What Hyde Park looks like
The University of Chicago's quadrangles fill Hyde Park's southwest corner in grey limestone, four and five storey Collegiate Gothic buildings sharing one cornice line down each block. 's bell tower rises off the quadrangles in the same stone, pointed arches and stone piers climbing its height.
A few blocks north on Ellis Avenue, the 's elliptical glass dome curves low over a lawn beside the Regenstein Library's raw concrete block. The dome's glass and steel stand in sharp contrast to the limestone quadrangles nearby.
East of campus, three and four storey brick courtyard apartment buildings line streets like , most dating from the first three decades of the twentieth century. A scattering of taller towers stands among them. Frank Lloyd Wright's sits closer to the quadrangles on Woodlawn Avenue, its cantilevered roof low and horizontal against the Gothic buildings nearby.
The stands north on 53rd Street in the same pale stone as the campus, a corner tower and rose window over the sidewalk. The Midway Plaisance runs as a broad green boulevard along the quadrangles' southern edge. East toward the lake, Jackson Park gives way to , an artificial peninsula built out into Lake Michigan.
Shot in Hyde Park
Proof used Rockefeller Chapel for a scene written into the script during production on campus. Divergent's Erudite sector is the Mansueto Library's glass dome, and Chain Reaction shot a street scene outside the United Church of Hyde Park.
Proof, 2005
Rockefeller Chapel

Divergent, 2014
Mansueto Library
Divergent used the Mansueto Library's elliptical glass dome as the Erudite sector, the faction environment where Tris finds her brother Caleb. The dome sits beside Regenstein Library's raw concrete facade, glass and steel against the quadrangles' limestone a few blocks south. Street View

What Hyde Park can double for
Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut
Yale's campus is built in the same Collegiate Gothic style and grey stone as Hyde Park's quadrangles, with a similar four and five storey scale around a shared green. Yale's courtyards run narrower and its stone often reads browner than Hyde Park's blue Bedford limestone, so a wide establishing shot needs care. Try searching grey Collegiate Gothic stone now.
Penn's Quadrangle dormitories share Hyde Park's four and five storey Collegiate Gothic massing and stone facades. Cope and Stewardson built them between 1895 and 1912. Penn's brick and terra cotta trim run warmer than Hyde Park's limestone and its own quad courtyards are smaller, so a tight courtyard frame holds the match better than a wide one. Jackson Heights' courtyard and garden apartment buildings, most built in the 1920s, are the same brick era and scale as the courtyard apartments around Hyde Park's quadrangles. Jackson Heights sits lower and flatter than Hyde Park's mix of courtyard blocks and taller towers, so a frame that keeps a tower out of view holds the match best.
