What Crown Heights looks like
runs east from Grand Army Plaza and divides Crown Heights in two. Olmsted and Vaux laid it out in the 1860s and it was built between 1870 and 1874. From Washington Avenue to Ralph Avenue it is 210 feet across between the outer sidewalks. Six lanes run down the middle, with a service road on each side and a planted mall between them.
First class housing was the plan for the parkway. The blocks north of it filled up between 1888 and 1893, after the Kings County Elevated Railway opened along Fulton Street. Those houses are Romanesque Revival and Queen Anne, in brownstone and limestone, with high stoops and round corner towers.
Albert E. White built two rows on between Nostrand and New York Avenues in about 1892. one block south has more of them. Montrose Morris designed the pair at 855 and 857 , with a round corner tower under a bell roof. More than 450 of those buildings became the Crown Heights North Historic District in 2007.
South of the parkway the Lubavitch movement has kept its headquarters at 770 since the 1940s. beside it has the shops that serve that community.
and Franklin Avenue are the other commercial streets, with terracotta fronts on some of the older buildings above the shops. east of Schenectady Avenue is a long run of four floor flats with fire escapes.
The West Indian carnival goes along the parkway on Labor Day, from Utica Avenue to Grand Army Plaza.

High Maintenance, 2019
The fourth season of High Maintenance shot in Crown Heights. The location coordinator wrote to Community Board 8 that the crew would be at 789 on July 31, 2019. Washington Avenue and Grand Avenue followed the day after. That block of St. Marks runs between New York and Brooklyn Avenues.
BrainDead, 2016
The city filming notices for the spring of 2016 put Robert and Michelle King's one season CBS series at an apartment at 1583 Pacific Street in March and at the bar at 618 on April 5, for interior dialogue. Across the street from the bar is Congregation Kol Israel, a fieldstone synagogue of 1928 by Tobias Goldstone. The open cut of the Franklin Avenue subway line runs behind it.
What Crown Heights can double for
Crown Heights can stand in for 1890s Brooklyn, a rowhouse block with high stoops and a boulevard wide enough to hold a parade.
