Tribeca is warehouses. The blocks between Canal Street and Chambers Street were built for storage and light manufacturing. The buildings are wide and low by Manhattan standards. Most are faced in cast iron or brick.
The streets are wider than SoHo and there is more sky. Many of the buildings still have their loading docks and freight doors at street level. Some still have the iron shutters.
has a row of nine Federal houses from the 1790s and 1820s. They did not all start there. Several were moved to the block in the 1970s when the produce market that occupied the area was cleared.
is a small triangle with warehouses on all three sides. It is the second oldest park in the city. For about a hundred years it was the center of the butter, cheese and egg trade.
is one block long with a skybridge crossing it at the second floor, built to connect two parts of a hospital that is no longer there.
Hook and Ladder 8 is on at Varick. It is a working firehouse and it was used as the Ghostbusters headquarters in 1984.
