The cross streets between Fifth Avenue and Lexington are rows of townhouses, four and five floors, in limestone and brownstone. They run block after block with very little newer building in between. The Landmarks Preservation Commission designated the Upper East Side Historic District in 1981 and extended it in 2010. It takes in the Fifth Avenue blockfronts from 59th Street up to 78th.
Fifth Avenue and are lined with apartment houses instead, most of them from the 1910s and 1920s, with canopies out over the sidewalk. 907 Fifth Avenue at 72nd Street is one of them, put up in 1915. runs between the two of them and is the shopping street, with the stores in the ground floors of the same kind of building.
Several of the buildings on Fifth above 82nd Street are museums. is at 82nd with its steps out front, and the is at 89th.
and Second Avenue look later than everything west of them. The elevated ran above Third until 1955. The last uptown train left on May 12 that year and demolition started in August. The subway that was promised in its place opened under Second Avenue on January 1, 2017, with three stations on the Upper East Side.
East of York Avenue the streets end at the water. starts at East 84th Street and runs along the river, and is inside it.
Films shot on the Upper East Side
Ocean's Eight was shot inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art over ten nights. The front of 169 East 71st Street is Holly Golightly's building in Breakfast at Tiffany's, and the apartment behind it was a set at Paramount in Hollywood.

The heist dinner happens in the Sackler Wing at the north end of the museum, under the sloping glass wall. Gary Ross has said everything in the Temple of Dendur was shot in the room itself, along with the scenes of the crew casing the museum and the one where Sandra Bullock plants a fake Banksy over a reworked Washington Crossing the Delaware. The gala is not a real one. It was staged for the film with help from the museum and from Vogue. The costume exhibition and the corridor by the bathroom were built on a stage at Bethpage on Long Island. The crew was allowed to move equipment in at half past five each evening. The first shot came around half past eight, once the sun was down. Everything had to be out of the building by seven in the morning, and that went on for ten nights.
