Filming on the Upper West Side, Manhattan

Central Park West is mostly apartment houses from around 1930, and several of them have two towers on top. The San Remo went up between 74th and 75th Streets in 1929 and 1930, twenty-seven floors with the two towers standing on a seventeen-floor base. The Dakota at 72nd Street is older than any of them. It was finished in 1884, when there was not much else on the avenue.

The side streets behind them are brownstones of four and five floors with stoops. Columbus Avenue and Amsterdam Avenue run between them, with stores and restaurants in the ground floors.

Broadway does not follow the grid. It comes in from Columbus Circle on a diagonal and crosses the other avenues on the way north. Verdi Square sits at the Amsterdam Avenue crossing at 71st Street. Above 78th Street Broadway runs parallel to everything else. The Belnord fills the whole block from Broadway through to Amsterdam between 86th and 87th Streets. Hiss and Weekes finished it in October 1909. At the time it was called the largest apartment building in the country.

West End Avenue and Riverside Drive are quieter and almost all residential. Riverside Park is below the Drive and runs down to the Hudson. The Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument stands over the park at 89th Street.

The tenement blocks around Lincoln Square came down at the end of the 1950s, and Lincoln Center and the Lincoln Towers apartments went up on the ground between 1962 and 1968.
