The estate was built on the West India Docks and the water is still there on both sides.
What Canary Wharf looks like
Canary Wharf is built on the West India Docks. They opened between 1802 and 1806 and were in use until 1980. A transit shed went up on one import dock berth in 1936 for the Canary Islands fruit trade, and the name comes from that.
After the docks closed the government made the Isle of Dogs an enterprise zone. Olympia & York began building in 1988 to a plan by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. opened in 1991 at 235 metres and was the tallest building in the country until 2012.
The water stayed. North Dock and South Dock run either side of the estate and the buildings sit on the ground between them. is the middle of it, with a fountain and round glass vents that let air out of the car park below. runs west from the square to and the river.
Nine warehouses went up on the north quay between 1800 and 1804. Two came through the wartime bombing. Both are on , listed grade I along with the quay walls of both docks.
Almost all of this ground is private. Canary Wharf Group owns the estate and runs its own permit scheme. The stations belong to Transport for London. and its footbridge go through the Canal & River Trust. and its footbridge go through the Tower Hamlets film office.
The Jubilee line station sits under in a drained arm of the dock. Norman Foster designed it. The box is 265 metres long and 24 metres deep. It opened on 17 September 1999.
Films shot in Canary Wharf
The Jubilee line station has taken a lot of the film work here. Rogue One shot in it overnight while it was closed to the public, and the scene is the Imperial base on Scarif. Men in Black International used it as the London branch office. A Quiet Place Day One used it for New York subway exteriors. 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later both shot underground scenes there. The station belongs to Transport for London, so it is permitted separately from the estate above it.

Canary Wharf is District One in the film, the military safe zone that survivors are moved back into. The production got permission to shoot on the estate and said it suited the story because the place is surrounded by water and joined to City Airport by an elevated railway. Principal photography began in August 2006 and ran ten weeks, based at 3 Mills Studios in east London. The empty central London footage was shot early in the morning with help from the local authority and the police.
Skyfall, 2012
The Virgin Active pool at Canary Wharf played Bond's hotel pool in Shanghai. Nine London locations were used in the film. The club is Canary Riverside, on at the Thames end of the estate.
