The markets are in the old Pickfords stables and the arches under the railway. The Regent's Canal runs through the middle of them.
What Camden Town looks like
The and the railway both run through Camden Town. The line reached Camden in 1837. This was where goods came off the trains and onto the roads. Pickfords kept stables here for the horses that pulled the vans and towed the barges, with a hospital for them beside the canal.
Those buildings are the markets now. A crafts market by the lock became a much larger complex on 30 March 1974. It took in the and the horse hospital. Stalls run along cobbled lanes and inside the brick arches under the railway. had a food market from the beginning of the last century. The produce stalls were gone by 2013.
The lock is , a twin chamber still worked by hand and listed Grade II. A cast iron road bridge of 1878 crosses it. On the roving bridge to the west, the parapet and the stone abutments are deeply scored by tow ropes.
runs south from the Britannia junction to . stands on what was the crescent's communal garden. Carreras built it as a cigarette factory between 1926 and 1928. It is 550 feet long and mostly white, with a pair of black cats at the entrance. Those cats are replicas. The originals went when the factory became offices in 1961, and the Egyptian detail was put back in the late 1990s.
The tube station has very narrow platforms, one directly above the other. It shuts to outbound passengers on Sunday afternoons.
Films shot in Camden Town
The canal at Camden Lock and the corner at Mornington Place have each been filmed more than once.
Spectre, 2015
Q keeps his workshop in a basement off the Thames, reached by boat through a water tunnel. That entrance was shot on the at Camden Lock. The market crowds are a few yards away. Paddington 2 used the same towpath two years later, for the chase after the book is stolen from Gruber's.
Brighton Rock, 2010
The gang's Brighton hideout is Mornington Place, at the end near the south end of . Rowan Joffe was not the first to use it. The same corner was the IRA hideout in the 1952 drama The Gentle Gunman, and the rundown property Peter Sarsgaard's character collects rent on in An Education.
